Consider Wembly

A nine and a half year old Devon Rex, Wembly is available at the Tompkins County SPCA. Wembly's skin condition is likely the result of an inherited skin condition common to his breed. The SPCA reports that Wembly is sweet and affectionate, good with both people and other cats. See more adoptable pets here.

Although Wembly is a "less-adoptable pet" because he is elderly and has a skin condition that will require ongoing treatment, he is still a great catch and will make a wonderful and loving pet for that special family - would that be you?

Thanks to PetFinder for bringing attention to the plight of less-adoptable pets and to the BlogPaws Be the Change for Pets group!

Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week

This week is Petfinder.com's Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week, a week dedicated to spotlighting those pets that are most often overlooked in shelters. It's all about getting people to take a second glance -- and give a second chance -- to those pets whose only crime is being a little older, the "wrong" color, or otherwise "less adoptable" -- but who have just as much love to give.

So BlogPaws Be the Change for Pets and I are taking up the cause for the next Be the Change Challenge! We're spreading the word about the many great adoptable pets who sit in shelters for weeks, months, and even years waiting for their forever home while the cute and cuddly kittens and puppies get snapped right up.

So who are these "less adoptable" pets? According to a survey of Petfinder member shelters and rescues the hardest to adopt out pets are senior or older pets, those with health problems (even minor ones), victims of breed prejudice (like Pit Bulls), shy pets, and those that need to be only pets. But that's not all! A lot of people overlook black and brindle dogs and cats as well. So next time you or a friend are looking to adopt, give these pets a second chance, a little more time and you never know, a less adoptable pet might just be the purrr-fect pet adoption for you!

Why don't you take a look at Pete? Pete is a senior, extra-large German Shepard/Collie mix located at the Tompkins County SPCA. They report that he is a sweet, gentle dog, but did frequently escape a tie-out, so would be best at a home with a fenced yard. Petfinder explains why these "less adoptable" pets make great companions here!

I'm posting this link to the BlogPaws Be the Change for Pets Facebook PageAt the end of the week, Be the Change for Pets will tabulate everyone's blog posts, Tweets and Facebook shares so we can see our global impact!

Want to help? Draft your own Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week blog post, use a LAPW template, share a less adoptable pet with friends, or even put an Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week pet search widget on your Web site.

The last Be the Change Challenge raised over 50,000 lbs of pet food and supplies for pets in need. Now let's get together and raise the bar for less adoptable pets!

Terrorists

Under the Bush Administration, the FBI improperly targeted left-leaning activist groups, including Greenpeace, PETA, and anti-war organizations, according to a recently released internal report authored by Inspector General Glenn A. Fine. The Washington Post writes:
Fine's report says that in some cases, agents began investigations of people affiliated with activist groups for "factually weak" reasons. In others, the report said, the FBI extended probes "without adequate basis" and improperly kept information about activist groups in its files.
While this makes my head want to explode, the targeting of left-leaning groups, especially those focused on animal rights and the environment, is not a surprise, nor is coverage of the atrocity new. Will Potter has been blogging about the violation of First Amendment rights at Green is the New Red since 2008.

If you are not a part of these groups, you might ask, what does this have to do with you? In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere."
