Woven Wire Basket

I learned how to make woven wire baskets at Metals Edge Studio. I'm pretty thrilled with how this one, my first, came out!

The Price of Metals

Jewelry making is getting more expensive! Gold has reached record prices as $1002.50/ounce, silver is at a whopping $20.68/ounce, and even our go-to base metal copper is creeping up at now $3.85/pound. According to NPR, representatives from the U.S. Mint were on Capitol Hill today to discuss using a new alloy for the penny since producing the one cent coin now costs 1.7 cents.

Happy Pi Day!

Today, on March 14, we celebrate pi, or 3.14...., the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Not only is pi an irrational number (which can't be expressed as a fraction and so is never-ending), it is also a transcendent number (meaning no algebraic operations can produce it). Coincidentally, today is also Albert Einstein's birthday.

Bite Update

My hand is healing (though still pocketed with little bite marks and now an unnatural shade of brown), and is fully functional though a little painful. Unfortunately, I had a very bad reaction to the amoxicillin the doctor prescribed for infection. I've been knocked out all week with stomach pains, fatigue, and headaches. Now that I'm off the pills, I hope I will start feeling better.

Little Cousin Born

Jodi gave birth to Jordin this morning at 12:53 a.m. According to GM, who heard from Ryan, Jordin is 7 pounds, 11 ounces, 19 inches long, with light brown hair. Both mother and daughter are doing well.

Accepted

My paper, "Opportunities for Personal Social Action in the For-Profit Firm," based in part on my dissertation, has been accepted for presentation at this year's Academy of Management Meeting in Anaheim, CA in August!

Viking Knit

Today, I took a Viking Knit class at Creative U, a relatively new jewelry/metalsmithing studio in Cave Creek. I've been wanting to learn Viking Knit, but wasn't confident I could teach myself. This bracelet, the one I made in class, used 3 36" sections of 24 gauge copper wire with 20 gauge copper wire for the connector rings and s-clasp. Isn't it pretty? As soon as I get more practice, I'm going to make one in fine silver.

While George is Away...

George is out of town this weekend...good timing, because I have been very sick all weekend. It might be the antibiotics I am taking or a bug, but I haven't felt very sociable. I have felt well enough, however, to:
  • watch Michael Clayton
  • watch Gone, Baby, Gone
  • read Obedience by Will Lavender
  • make a full Persian chain mail bracelet with colored aluminum rings.

George will be home tomorrow, and it will be nice to have him back!
