Spring Artfest

Today, I had a table at the Spring Artfest, an arts/crafts show for ASU students, faculty, and staff. On the plus side, the table was only $10 and proceeds for an accompanying silent auction benefit the School of Art. On the minus side, it was HOT! I got very sunburned--at least I wore a hat. Also, too many people make and sell jewelry, so the competition was fierce, and I didn't do as well as I'd hoped. (Perhaps I should have ironed the table cloth!)

The organizer told us that the school's food service would be selling food and drinks, but they were nowhere to be seen. About 1:00, I was about to die for a Diet Coke, when, like an angel, Ben appeared at my booth. Good sport that he is, he went to the MU and bought a super large fountain diet soda for me. With that, I was able to get through the rest of the afternoon.

Later, when I was teaching, the students (who know I am easily distracted), were very interested in my sunburn. They asked where I was to have received such a bad burn, and I told them Hayden Lawn. Of course, they wanted to know why I was on Hayden Lawn all day, so I told them about the ArtFest. They couldn't believe I hadn't told them about it, but I explained it would not at all be ethical to promote it to them--an especially egregious offense since MGT 410 is an ethics class!

My Neurotic Puppy

The vet gave Harvey anti-anxiety pills. It's hard to know if they are working because he's never very anxious around me. The test will be when Grandma Chris visits in April!

Glass Soldering

I thought I'd try my hand at glass soldering. It's hard. My pendants are not turning out well because it's tricky to lay the solder while holding the soldering iron. I ruined a few by burning the copper tape, and I accidently dropped one which cracked upon impact. Usually, I pick up jewelry-making techniques a little faster, but this one is going to take lots of practice!

Pretty in Pink Pig

If I remember this conversation correctly, Lizzie once told me that in the 70s, they decoupaged everything. I can see why because it is fun! A trendy company called Decopatch is manufacturing special paper that makes it easy to, as they say, "paint with paper." I particularly like their paper mache animal forms. Last night, I finished a cute pig!

Help the Phoeniz Zoo Orangutans

Jen sent me an email letting me know that the Phoenix Zoo is planning a much-needed upgrade for the orangutan exhibit. The first stage of the upgrade is a night/cold-weather shelter. If enough funds aren't collected for the shelter, the orangutans will have to be housed at a different zoo until the new exhibit is complete. This, of course, it totally unfair to these great animals who as Jen put it, "didn't have a choice to be ambassador for their species." (As a side note, when George was employeed at the zoo, he worked with these orangutans.)

If you visit the links below, you can read a story about the new exhibit as well as see adorable photos.

PLEASE think about donating. There is even a raffle with all proceeds going to this project. If you are interested, let me know and I will put you in contact with Jen.
